“Strange” graphic – “Good” sound

If you are a fan of Square Enix, you can easily realize that Master of the Masks… is nothing like Square Enix’s usual style. However, while most of Masters of the Masks is formulaic, its cel-shaded graphics and a surprisingly intricate mask creation system will surely keep you interested.

Moreover, if you are one of those who prefer the “goods” and the “looks” than the game itself, you will soon be disappointed, not because of the lack of the stoutness, or the cuteness of the characters, but because no matter how cute they look, how masculine and handsome they are, the characters in “Masters of the Masks” will gladly be granted a “mask” to wear from the beginning till the end of the game.

These masks will be inseparably act as the soul, the strength of the player, like one of the characters have said and I quote: “Looking good! Who needs a face when u’ve got Masks like this?”

You don’t have to be a Square Enix fan to admit the fact that the graphics isn’t quite like your typical Square Enix mobile games. The closest thing to describe it would be like a Western cartoon turned into a game. Yes, dialogs are delivered in Japanese visual novel fashion, but the aesthetics are not what you’d usually associate with that region. Everything is cel shaded, either in the character portraits or in the 3D models. Not that it’s never been done before, but it’s definitely nothing you might have expected from the game maker.

Unique gameplay

Anyone who has ever had the opportunity to try out the game Angry Birds Epic of Rovio would have no difficulties in recognizing the familiar “drag-and-drop” play of Masters of the Masks. To attack, the player must “hold down” character and “drag and drop” to the opponent.

Like what you might normally do with when moving files or folders on touchscreens, the main action in this game, at least in the battle field, is tapping and holding on a character and dragging his or her attack to a target, represented by a directional arrow. It’s that simple, though, at the same time, a bit more work than simply tapping here and tapping there. At the very least, it keeps the player aware of who to target.

Honestly, the Masters of the Masks is nothing different from other immersive mobile games: you start the game, you complete the tasks in a quick manner, you then collect your reward to craft stuffs to increase your strength and move on.
