Mutant Football League - Mutant League Football successor keeps churning with another pre-alpha trailer
[dropcap style=”style1″]N[/dropcap]othing is going to kill the spiritual successor to “Mutant League Football”. The game is being shown this weekend at PAX Prime.

Vietgame.asiaDigital Dreams Entertainment, the studio helmed by the creator of the original game, showed off another two-minute trailer of pre-alpha gameplay for Mutant Football League, giving the most current picture possible of where it stands in development. The game is being shown this weekend at PAX Prime.

The trailer appears to closely match the sequences in a trailer released in January so that viewers can see and judge the improvements.

Mutant Football League is being developed on the Unity Engine for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox One, iOS and Android devices. It’s now shooting for an early 2016 release for the game’s Windows PC version, with plans for the console versions to come later, and then mobile editions after that. More details on the game can be seen in this news release.

It’s the brainchild of Michael Mendheim, the lead designer of the original Mutant League Football for Sega Genesis in 1993. It was succeeded by Mutant League Hockey, and even a two-season animated series based on the franchise that aired later.

A reboot of Mutant League Football has long been clamored for by fans and even developers nostalgic for the over-the-top mayhem the arcade-sports title offered. However, a 2013 Kickstarter that sought $750,000 to make Mutant League Football fell well short of its goal. Mendheim later said he thought the decision to highlight the mobile versions in the Kickstarter pitch sent the unintended message that its console and PC versions wouldn’t get serious effort, scaring off donors.

Though EA Sports‘ general manager for American football products has said he was frequently pestered by his developers about reactivating the series (its logo cameoed on uniforms in 2012’s NFL Blitz), EA Sports has shown no interest in doing so. More importantly, the Mutant League trademark (which had been used in two games) is listed as dead since 2001 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
